“I have lived with many Zen masters, all of them cats.” Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment.
I have often heard it said that cats are the ultimate Zen masters and being a cat owner, I have to agree with that sentiment. If you want a good example of being present, observe a cat. One moment she is lounging in sun enjoying the warmth, the next she’s stalking imaginary prey with all the focus of a predator.
Over time and with patience, Tai Chi can cultivate a similar level of presence within you. With that presence, you’ll become more aware of how you respond to stressful situations and that will ultimately lead to making healthy choices. It is not unusual for students, after only a few months of dedicated practice, to notice positive changes in their eating habits, moods and sleep patterns.
These changes occur not because of some magical, mysterious quality of Tai Chi. It is simply the practice of mindfulness.
The benefits of owning a cat are numerous, from relieving loneliness to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. I would add that cats remind you to stay present and increase awareness. Tai Chi is a wonderful means in which to cultivate these qualities. So be patient, present and most importantly, enjoy your practice. Every moment dedicated to mindful practice is time well spent.
